frottage -Reunion with Memory-

Okurayama Studio’s philosophy, “give life back to the mountain,” suggests that there is life in the mountain. The surface of Okurayama is covered with “Okura Sabi” a red soil rich in iron content, formed by the weathering of Daté Kan Stone. The transformation of stone into soil encapsulates the cycle of life in the mountain, embodying the memory of the land itself. The exhibition will feature objects created with the theme of the memory of life and the reunion of memories, using this “Okura Sabi” as the main material.

OKURAYAMA STUDIO / Principal Takasuke Yamada

At Okurayama Studio, our highly skilled staff handles the entire process of quarrying, processing, and shaping our Daté Kan Stone, which is internationally renowned for its unique appearance.
We deliver the strength and beauty of Daté Kan Stone to the world in a variety of forms such as art pieces, construction, products and other projects while collaborating with successful creators in the fields of art, design, and architecture.
And by giving tours of our mountain and transmitting its related culture, we provide experiences that awaken the sensibilities toward nature that were enjoyed in ancient times and help people see the connections between humans and nature in a new light.
In recent years, we have expanded our studio’s potential beyond the stone of Okurayama by conducting research on the many other materials that the mountain is naturally blessed with.
