Memories of Cars: Material Transformation and the Scenes through Glass

TOYOTA Structure Design Studio aims to develop Zero Waste Car through its base design philosophy, "Geological Design". We are working not only to minimize the earth's resource utilization from the initial stage of development, but also to consider material selection, recycling, and even to the next life of materials (upcycling to make it more attractive than the previous life) which cannot be recycled into the car by any means.

The purpose of this exhibition is to let people know the facts of earth's resource utilization, and to make feel close to them on a life-size scale. You can actually see these works closely and look at them from various angles.

All work's materials are the things for automotive materials. In other words, these are the things become waste of cars. Among these, there are glass that is almost never recycled and "slag" that is always left behind after various metals that have been reused or turned into the next life.

In this exhibition, we decided to embody the diversity of glass and its essence, and to enclose the material of the car within it. By using glass as a medium, the invisible memories of previous lives and the free and multifaceted transformations of the material can also be visualized in a semi-permanent way.
